Recent flooding in Bosnia has residents and rescuers facing not only catastrophic landslides but also an added danger: unexploded ordinances of war numbering in excess of 120,000 landmines and more than 9 thousand minefields. These ordinances have been unearthered by landslides that have also destroyed homes, roads and businesses. The warning signs once marking the location of minefields have also been swept away by the landslides that have been caused by excessive flooding throughout the region, and now nobody knows where the deadly devises might be headed.
Experts warn that the landmines might pose dangers beyond Bosnian borders, as rising waters may carry the devises downstream to as much as half of South-Eastern Europe.
